The high tea experience at Zephyr Cafe was an exquisite journey through a thoughtfully curated menu that honours some of the most well-known artisan producers in Wellington. The unique flavour combinations and the emphasis on the details of the high tea service itself really set this experience apart.
The menu in its entirety was stunning, there wasn't one item that I felt was even marginally ho hum. There were certainly some standouts though, you know, those tastebud explosions you can recall on a whim?
Amongst the savoury offerings that included a petite egg sandwich with Mighty Green's Micro Salad as a nod to classic high tea traditions, was this little pocket rocket of a cheese scone with the hero being the rocket fuel spiked butter.
The goats feta and walnut tart was another stunner - the creamy filling was divine against a beautiful crisp base. Then, for my absolute favourite savoury item, the Woody's pork katsu scotch quail egg with Japanese curry. It added a unique, hearty element to the menu with a perfect blend of texture and flavour.
The sweet options were equally impressive. I loved the innovative take on a sweet scone. Fix & Fogg "to-die-for" almond butter cream together with cherry jam was set against a cherry-cola scone.
The lemon posset was a refreshing palate cleanser with a sophisticated citrus twist before finishing with the tiramisu choux profiterole, filled with mascarpone and drizzled with Whittaker's chocolate sauce.
Many of us took the opportunity to enjoy our high tea with a glass of bubbles. There are plenty of beverage options and the tea is loose-leaf served in indiviudal pots - something that is important to the High Tea Honeys!
Overall, Zephyr Cafe's high tea is a masterful blend of tradition and innovation, offering a delightful array of flavours and textures that are sure to impress and satisfy.
